One class in, and I’m already calling it…

April 14th, 2013

Each student makes a self-portrait at the beginning of each class. Helps us make sure we're working with the correct student/correct camera. This is the neighbourhood park where we worked yesterday.

Students make a self-portrait at the beginning of each class. After class, it helps us make sure we’ve matched the correct student/correct camera. Lupe’s photo also shows the neighbourhood park where we worked yesterday.

Elizabeth is an artist.  She’s a painter, and does amazing paper collages that you’d swear are paintings. Yesterday afternoon, Elizabeth hung some of her artwork for an art event at her church.  She and another painter had just finished getting everything on the walls, when some kids wandered in.  And they said something like ‘oh wow, this is art… just like photography’.

Elizabeth asked them what they meant, and they said that people were teaching them photography, in their neighbourhood.  That neighbourhood happens to be where we’re holding ONE-SHOT.

Our students walked into that exhibition,  they saw the artist’s work, and identified with it.  They already see themselves in a different context.

When I heard this story, I knew that if nothing else happens with this workshop, it’s already been a success.
